Oil production of Venezuela, period 1998 - 2020

PDF (Español (España))

Abstract

Venezuela is currently facing a series of problems, especially from the political point of view, which has generated many tensions in the economic and social field. And faced with this situation, the oil sector, the main source of foreign exchange, so necessary today for a country that must maintain an efficient productive apparatus, does not escape. Venezuela, over many years, played a predominant role within the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC): even more, for being one of the propellant members of its foundation, being within the five (5) major oil exporting countries in the world. Today, the reality is different; It has practically disappeared from the oil market, where OPEC itself no longer includes it in the list of exporting countries. As of June of this year, production was around 300,000 barrels per day; in sharp decline during the last three (3) years, which makes it a source of uncertainty, as it does not have a volume of investments to maintain its operating capacity; For this reason, its recovery is considered slow with the aggravation of a notorious loss of its traditional clients, currently occupied by other oil-exporting countries. Internal problems within the industry, coupled with the sanctions imposed by the United States administration on the Venezuelan government, make the outlook even more difficult.
